Spotlight on: Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid has only recently entered my sphere of beauty ingredients, after seeing it popping up all over the place as a star ingredient in so many natural skincare products and makeup. It’s hailed as a skin saviour like no other, plumping & hydrating skin, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

So what is Hyaluronic Acid and do you need it?

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid isn’t actually an acid. It’s a sugary molecule that occurs naturally in skin’s structure and connective tissue throughout the body. It helps lubricate your joints and keep things full of moisture so they stay in the right shape in the right place.

As we age, our skin loses the ability to preserve moisture, resulting in the visible loss of firmness, pliability, and plumpness. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to replenish moisture that is crucial to having younger-looking, supple skin.

In fact, one gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six litres of water, according to this study. Lack of moisture is one of the main culprits of aging skin, which is why this ingredient—which attracts moisture to your skin—is a must-have when it comes to repairing your skin’s moisture barrier.

Skin types that will benefit from Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a powerhouse ingredient that will benefit most, if not all, skin types.

Its calming, hydrating, and antioxidant properties are great for all skin types, even for rosacea-prone and eczema-prone skin.

Simply put, hyaluronic acid has powerful anti-aging properties and is also one of the premier hydrating ingredients for skin, even for oily, sensitive, or breakout-prone skin.

Oily and/or acne prone skin

Oily skin still needs moisturisers, but not the rich and heavy kind that can clog pores and make skin look even shinier. When my skin was super oily I was constantly suffering from dehydrated skin – go figure, huh? I really struggled finding a natural product that was lightweight yet hydrating. One of the best things about hyaluronic acid is that it’s super hydrating and yet lightweight. It’s perfect for those who can’t use creamy or oily moisturisers (e.g. those with acne). Where was hyaluronic acid when I needed it?!

Dry & dehydrated and/or mature skin

Hyaluronic acid can enhance moisture content beyond comparison with anything else, and at the same time revitalize skin’s outer layers so they look and feel softer, smoother, and, especially, radiantly hydrated! That’s how it instantly improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sensitive skin

Hyaluronic acid is also incredibly gentle, for even the most sensitive, redness-prone skin. In fact, its positive influence on skin’s surface is due in part to its natural calming benefit, which means it can help sensitive skin as well as blemish-prone skin.
