Review of LAVANILA Natural Deodorant
Finding a natural, aluminium-free deodorant that works can be a pretty hard task. With all the right intentions you give up your trusty Rexona and embark on the trial and error process of finding an effective, safe deodorant. Sometimes you hit the jackpot, other times you’re paranoid about putting your arms up. I won’t lie, some of them are pretty crappy.
So far, from my experience, I’ve found products containing bicarb soda works pretty well. However for those with sensitive skin, it can be pretty harsh. Bicarb soda is very alkaline so can irritate (especially if you’ve just shaven).
What do you do then if you can’t tolerate bicarb? Do you go back to the toxic aluminium stuff, or just go for the all-natural stink approach?
LAVANILA has created a range of aluminum and bicarb-free deodorant that is 100 percent natural, safe, and effective. This deodorant is free of parabens, aluminum, PEG’s, petrochemicals, phthalates, and synthetic dyes.
The LAVANILA Healthy Deodorant is a 100% Healthy solution. Completely free of harsh chemicals, it’s a safe, effective and luxurious way to fight odor. Their formula is packed with anti-oxidants and a proprietary beta glucan technology to not only fight odor, but nourish, strengthen, and soothe the skin.
Sound too good to be true? Well I’ve tested it out and I think this one just may deliver on what it promises.
I’ve tried A LOT of natural deodorants and generally they do smell ok. However this one takes the cake on the fragrance department. Pretty dam fantastic really.
When the brands creator, Danielle Raynor, started developing formulations for her range, many of them included vanilla, not only for its rich, sweet, luxurious fragrance but also for its anti-oxidant properties and aromatherapy qualities of soothing and comforting. As a result, natural vanilla is an ingredient in many of their products which means, they smell F-ing awesome.
LAVANILA don’t just make great deodorants. They also have a range of super effective and amazing fragrances. If you love the deodorants, buy yourself a matching fragrance to keep the scent lasting all day.
* I’ve been using Vanilla Coconut deodorant and Vanilla Grapefruit perfume.
Very easy to use, roll on applicator. Well, sort of roll-on. It’s a stick that rubs on. Because it’s a drier stick, it doesn’t feel wet or sticky. Kind of powdery when applied.
Because it is a more powdery consistency it does rub on white, and can transfer to your clothes. HOWEVER, unlike a regular deodorant, it does wipe off very easily. Nothing like the usual white marks a standard deodorant will leave on you. I have NFI what they put in that stuff that clings so tightly to your clothes. It’s kind of messed up. But I diverge…
LAVANILA works for me for around 8 hours. Like most natural deodorants, you aren’t going to get 24 hour protection. If I’m hitting the gym or know I’m going to get a little sweaty, I’ll reapply in the afternoon.
If I don’t reapply, I’ll still smell ok but there is a little whiff of sweatiness. It does tame any BO scent very effectively all day, but not quite the sweaty smell. This is very normal though for a natural deodorant.
Just to clarify, this is not an antiperspirant so it doesn’t leave my underarms dry all day, but I can learn to look past that in order to decrease my chances of breast cancer.
Overall, I would recommend it if you’re fairly sedentary or at least keen to reapply.
Tip: Many people find a natural deodorant will only work for them for so long (like a month or two). I recommend having two to swap between every month or so, so your body never gets used to one. LAVANILA is a perfect product for this as it also gives your skin a break from bicarb deodorants. Check out some of my other reviews to find a good second deodorant.
A deodorant stick will set you back about $14 (USD)/$25 (AUD).
Yea, it’s pretty steep. It is an American company so unfortunately you’re paying for it to be imported too.
Sephora also carries much of the range; buy in-store or online.
